The Nuclear Waste Strategy Coalition (NWSC) announces the appointment of Katrina McMurrian as its new executive director. Following a brief transition period, McMurrian today succeeds Martez Norris, who dutifully served the NWSC in various roles since shortly after its inception in 1993 and as executive director for the last decade.
A former Florida Public Service Commissioner, McMurrian draws upon extensive regulatory experience in taking on this important role. Throughout much of her tenure at the Florida PSC, she focused on nuclear waste issues and their impacts on consumers in Florida and across the nation. Most notably, McMurrian served on the NWSC Executive Committee from 2007 to 2009 and also as Vice Chair of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Subcommittee on Nuclear Issues.
“Katrina is committed to seeing that the millions of consumers who have paid and continue to pay into the Nuclear Waste Fund ultimately receive what was promised in return – the removal of spent nuclear fuel from the plants in our states,” said NWSC Chairman and South Carolina Public Service Commissioner David Wright. “We are thrilled to have her work with us on developing strategies to advance that goal.”
“I am honored that the NWSC Executive Committee has afforded me the opportunity to join this stellar team and once again pursue nuclear waste program reform,” McMurrian said. “By uniting, the public and private entities that comprise the NWSC have positively influenced the nuclear waste debate in Washington for years, and we invite other affected states and utilities to join us as we continue to shed light on this important consumer issue and present a solid case for action to all three branches of government.”
McMurrian received both a bachelor’s degree in finance and an MBA from Florida State University in Tallahassee.
